This is a male Hooded Robin, not a woodpecker.
The apparent attention of the robin to the tree is due only to the angle from which the photo was taken.
I was hiding behind the tree at the time, not that the robin didn't know I was there. I think a tree between us made me appear less of an imminent threat.
